Eska returns with bombastic afrofusion “voice painting” single Down Here – album to follow

Almost a decade after her self-titled Mercury Prize nominated album ‘Eska‘ returns to music to continue exploring her genre-defying approach to sound. Her new single ‘Down Here’ focuses on Eska’s voice. It layers harmonies in a way that allows a song to bubble up to an eruption that’s backed up by crunchy, processed drums that wouldn’t be out of place in a heavy rock track. As always, Eska’s music is a melting pot of cultures and genres and this single merges Afrofusion vocal hooks with rock drums and a torrent stream of emotion. Eska describes the song as a “voice painting” as the backing melody of ‘music running through my veins’ spirals on repeat to push the main vocals through. It is an uplifting and freeing song that you can really give yourself up to.

‘Down Here’ is the first single from the forthcoming album ‘The Ordinary Life of a Magic Woman’. Here you can expect all kinds of genre-mashing surprises across its thirteen tracks. It is available for pre-order now. The vinyl release is on the 25th April 2025, with the digital release following on the 23rd May. After a decade of waiting, I can’t wait to see what kaleidoscope of ideas and sounds we’re given.
