Whatever The Weather is the moniker for Lorraine James. The London-based electronic artist releases IDM and vocal-focused collaborations with other artists using her real name, but under Whatever The Weather, things are more experimental. Each track is given a title in temperature, and Lorraine says this is the “emotional temperature” of that track. This lets Whatever The Weather explore all kinds of ambient, melodic, or rhythmic impressionistic electronic music. We can run the gambit of emotions as the temperature rises or falls.
To celebrate the release of the album ‘Whatever The Weather II’, a new single ‘8°C’ celebrates a relaxed, thoughtful approach to ambience. The track focuses on a rubbery keyboard motif that rolls off the keys effortlessly and hangs in a tape-warped haze. It is calming, and cosy, but also has a melancholic aftertouch in its hue. It is the kind of song I can have on repeat for ages and let the mood take over the room. Perfect for pause and reflection. It isn’t the coldest track on the album, but it’s one of the cooler pieces regardless.
Whatever The Weather II released today. Its eleven tracks permeate around a similar vibe of hazy reflection or sizzling excitement. The album can be bought on Bandcamp, and I’ll be reviewing it later this month. For more information about Whatever The Weather visit her YouTube.
As a total aside, Lorraine James recently performed a half-hour set turning musical samples and cues from Ubisoft games into a glitchy ambient performance. It is part of Ubisoft’s “Carte Blanche” series which allows musicians full access to their game’s music and sound effects library to create a musical journey through their games. The video performance is a little harsh on the eyes with all the visual effects but it is a fascinating interpretation of loads of games from Assassins Creed, Splinter Cell, Far Cry and Riders Republic.
