Luscious indie folk vibes pour out of every sound on Maltese singer-songwriter Alexandra Alden’s latest single, ‘magnolia’. The warm and inviting acoustic guitars, brushed percussions, and Alexandra’s effortlessly smooth voice make for an intoxicating concoction. There is a hint of The Carpenters here, with its graceful fluidity, with more recent artists like Laura Marling, Helena Deland, and Adrienne Lenker sounding in similar ballparks. Alden keeps things sounding classic and rustic throughout with a single that sings of vulnerability, resilience, and cultural identity. The song was sparked by a chance encounter with a magnolia flower just before blooming, and Alexandra’s exploration of the big step into the unknown that blooming becomes.
‘Magnolia’ is the first single from the forthcoming album ‘When is it too late?’ which is due for release on 10th October. The album takes note of Sylvia Plath’s fig tree analogy, exploring the weight of choices taken and the paths not tread. As someone in their 40s, this resonates with me as I hit that predictable midlife crisis of “have I done the right things?”. Expect more acoustic folk beauties, intimate reflections, thoughts on nomadic experiences, and a mixture of American and Mediterranean folk. On the journey to creating the album, Alexandra says:
“For a while, my self-esteem had eroded so far that I was becoming a stranger to myself for many reasons. I spent time away in the Austrian mountains, contemplating a different life altogether from that of making music. But in the end, I found myself on the road again, playing tiny shows in Italian villages, rediscovering the magic of connection and the joy of doing what I love. That sense of movement, of longing, of finding beauty in the in-between, runs through this album. I returned home knowing I needed to make changes, even though the idea of that scared me and I didn’t realise how challenging it would be to take the leap of faith that I so needed to take.”
