Introducing… APACALDA

‘There’s a Shadow in my Room and it isn’t Mine’ is the title for Montreal alternative indie artist APACALDA’s forthcoming album. It is due for release on 13th June, and hits a centerpoint of synth pop, darkwave, goth-tinged indie pop, and a bit of alt-rock. APACALDA has poppy hooks in mind to draw listeners in, but expect the non-single tracks to be a darker, atmospheric, and muddier affair.

The album’s core centres around the idea that we are born pure and our life experiences form shadows and burdens as we grow up. Each song tackles stories and thoughts on obsession, jealousy, suicide, sexual violence, and key life lessons, and instead of repressing them, it encourages the listener to confront and release the emotions and shadows built up inside. This translates into the music, too. We might have some muddy synths and stoic vocals, but the melody will be peppy. On the flipside, a grungier, sludgy anthem might be dragging pearls of wisdom lyrically from a musical cavern. The textures, layers, and depths are what make APACALDA’s music so inviting.

Her latest single ‘Darkness’ is the perfect case in point. Its liquidy synths and beats could work in an alternative club scene, or a party, or just about any indie/alt concert. The music video tells the story of two people navigating their journeys of self-discovery and sexual identity. It’s a hot mess, and beautifully shot.

‘Darkness’ is out now, with APACALDA’s full-length album out on 13th June. For more information, visit her Instagram.
