Indie pop sisters Natalie and Meegan Closner celebrate a new label signing (Nettwerk) by announcing their upcoming album. It is the first release since their other sister, Alice, stepped away from performing and touring with JOSEPH. Now a duo, JOSEPH continues to hone their craft with songs that sound perfect for the Phoebe Bridgers crowd.
Their new single ‘Bye And Bye’ resonated with me lyrically as much as musically. On the single, Natalie says:
“‘Bye and Bye’ is about being a woman in her late thirties with none of the results she expected from the plans she made – no husband, no house, no kids, no religion…you have to make peace with it. You have to forgive yourself.”
At 41, recently single, recently losing a parent and helping support the other, in a job that is increasingly draining my mental health, this feels exactly where I am in life. I love how the midlife expectation overwhelm translates musically into bigger-than-it-should-sound guitar chords and subwoofer fuzzing kick drums. The sound is blown out to sound like each strum and hit is like a kick in the teeth. The vocals stand defiant as JOSEPH’s harmonies build into a cathartic finale of affirmation and confidence. Be kind to yourself. Expectation is not reality, and this track nails it.
‘Bye And Bye’ is out now. The forthcoming untitled album is still being worked on, so there is no release date just yet. To keep up to date on release news and tour dates, visit JOSEPH’s website.
