Introducing… Sophia Kennedy

Berlin-based singer-songwriter Sophia Kennedy has just released her third album, ‘Squeeze Me’. The album plays with a single question: are you holding me close or squeezing me too tight? Across ten tracks, Sophia fuses together indie pop, a bit of dance, and a chanteuse persona of sorts. Elements of R&B give Sophia’s music a soulful warmth, but she rarely goes for an obvious hook or motif. It makes for curious earworms that take a few listens to slot into place.

‘Imaginary Friend’ is Sophia Kennedy’s latest single. It features a one-take music video of Sophia as a window cleaner in the air, smooshing her chops across the window. My clean freak mother would take offence, but it makes for an unusual and playful music video. Kennedy studied cinematography in Hamburg when she moved there from Baltimore, and clearly enjoys putting that to good use in her music videos.

  1. Squeeze Me snuck up on me and continues to nibble and bite. It has become my comfort album of 2025 as in it always seems like a good time to play it. Sophia’s voice has the perfect balance of angular arthaus and sweet indie.
