Introducing… Camilla Wickman

Camilla Wickman’s music is a true wave of emotion. The singer-songwriter from Salt Lake City merges together piano pop with prog rock to create explosive dynamic shifts in her music. One verse might be a peppy piano ditty, with Wickman singing about land or Mormon myths. Then suddenly there will be a visceral shift in tone, pace, and urgency with big percussive smashes, guitars, and synth string arrangements. Elsewhere, Camilla will lean into her orchestral pop side, which is more ethereal and closer to her sound healing side. Whichever way she goes, you’ll be in for a ride.

‘Horsey’ is more the piano/prog rock side of Camilla Wickman. It’s the lead single from her forthcoming debut album ‘Red Rock, Seal Skin’. It touches on Camilla’s own transition out of organised religion, but is told as an eleven-track dream sequence. We’ll travel through Celtic and Scandinavian folklore, generational fables and memories, and concealed histories. Camilla has a neat Q&A about the album and track on Instagram.

If you are a fan of Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Mitski, Sarah Walk and Emaline Delapaix – this will be well worth investigating. Wickman also says they are a “Kate Bush rising”, which I love. I also adore the layered mix of piano rock and folklore, borrowing from Celtic instruments at times. Is this how Loreena McKennitt would sound if she were a rock wild child? Quite possibly…

You can pre-order the album on Bandcamp. Visit Camilla Wickman’s website for more information on all their musical projects.
