Toronto-based garage rock/synth-pop quartet Neon Bloom is embracing their muddier side with their new single ‘Like A Lover’. Merging together the grungy simplicity of quickfire hooks like Nirvana, Nadine Shah and The White Stripes, with a more psychedelic earworm of bass, the track is a riot. Whilst Neon Bloom usually has plenty of synths at the ready, this track goes straight for the rock jugular.
The track is written from the perspective of a woman who lives their life on their own terms. That may mean living to extremes or excess, but it can lure everyone around you into your world, too. Lead vocalist Jen says:
“This character is based on my stage persona – how I feel when [I’m] performing. On stage, it can be so freeing to pretend a bit [and to] play out exaggerated parts of myself in front of people. It’s strange, but there’s something primal and deeply liberating about it, like an exercise for the ego.”
From the bombastic and elastic riffs to the roar of the chorus, it’s perfect for letting your hair down and running wild. Whilst no EP or LP has been announced yet, Neon Bloom is working on new material. You can follow them on Bandcamp or Instagram for more information.
