Merging together synthpop with darkwave undertones, Magnetic Skies return with their new single ‘Back To Life’. Between the driving drums, the catchy synth loops, the disco phasers, the electric guitar solo, and rousing vocals, the single brings out the best of their ’80s synthpop influences. I particularly enjoy the balance of melodic satisfaction and a bubbling, broody angst that hides underneath. It works incredibly well and is the perfect entry point for those new to the band.
Originally conceived as a duo, Magnetic Skies started as a project between Simon Kent and Jo Womar. They love ’80s synth-driven post-punk and spent the next year crafting a sound that nods to the past, but feels distinctly their own, too. Later, Lenin Alegria joined on drums. Their debut album was released in 2023, and ‘Back To Life’ is the band’s second single as they gear up for a future release.
Speaking about the single, Simon Kent explains:
“‘Back To Life’ explores the tension between our deep, universal connection and the fragmentation we face in the modern world. It’s about sensing that chaos, feeling the void, the noise, and still holding on to the hope that we can come back from the edge. It’s a call to reconnect, to bring something broken back into wholeness.”
Alongside the single, the music video features some excellent timelapse photography of modern society, which is something I always enjoy. Whilst no follow-up to their 2023 debut ‘Empire Falling’ has been announced yet, you can visit the Magnetic Skies website to join their mailing list. I’m sure an announcement will come soon, and the band are playing tour dates across the UK in November.
