AmbientAmbient ElectronicDroneExperimentalIntroducing...Modular Synths

Introducing… Filip Leyman

It feels a bit off having an introductory post for someone with over 50 albums to his name, but Filip Leyman is finally releasing some solo work. Often associated with Anna von Hausswolff, his debut solo release will be released by Anna’s own record label, Pomperipossa Records.

‘Beyond the Sea’ is the seven-minute electronic track that opens Filip’s debut album, also becoming the lead single in the process. It is a slow-burning drone of electronic hums that pan out wider and wider over its runtime, becoming ever more epic in scope. First, one layer of percussive plectrum click synths cascade, and then another, slowly joined by twisting and evolving synths that emulate harmoniums. It has all the hallmarks of a modular synth epic, yet it is a controlled flight that whips into a frenzy before powering down into a blinking ember.

Filip Leyman is used to working with electronics and experimental drones, and there’s a hint of Fourth World exotica hiding in the shadows. It doesn’t emerge on this track, but I expect to hear hints of it on the album itself. The debut is called ‘Soft Light’ and the concept is that Leyman will blend rising rhythms and microtonal melodies from modular synths together to create an organic electronic experience for the listener. ‘Beyond the Sea’ washes over you, excuse the pun, and I’m looking forward to more of the same feelings from the album.

‘Beyond the Sea’ is out now. The album ‘Soft Light’ releases on the 29th August. You can preorder it on Bandcamp, and follow Filip Leyman there for more information.
