Like myself, Rapt (aka Jacob Ware) likes the concept of an album. A body of work that is held together by theme, time, or mood. The slowcore indie folk artist has decided to try something new for his latest music, a single series. This allows Rapt to write and record songs as he sees fit without structuring them as an album or a themed collection of music. The series will become a body of work over time, but to me, it sounds more like musical journaling than actively making an album.
The first track of the series is called ‘Ocean Lay Straight’. It is a simple finger guitar and vocal piece, with some additional cello backing, that is quintessential Rapt. You could hear this song in the English countryside or a French folk cafe. It has a nostalgic quality that feels earnest and clean, like a comfort blanket when you need it most.
‘Ocean Lay Straight’ is out now. You can follow the series, tentatively titled ‘Not All Is Dark / All Is Never Lost”, over on Bandcamp. The timelines for future songs are unknown, but that makes the waiting all the more fun (I hope).
