Following on from the live album ‘Symphony of Lungs’, which turned their debut album into a symphonic performance, Florence + The Machine are back for their sixth studio album. Entitled ‘Everybody Scream’, there is a spooky theme this time around, with a Halloween release date, and a mystic music video to boot. Florence Welch wrote and produced the album over the last two years, and it’s partly inspired by having emergency surgery during the Dance Fever tour in 2023. This followed a broken foot, forcing an examination of how the limits of her body aren’t quite what she thought they’d be. This inspired the album’s themes of ageing, dying, horror folk, and finding mysticism in the mundane.
‘Everybody Scream’ is a riot cry of anger, love, and bewitching possession. From the background screams to the rallying command to ask everyone to dance, sing, move, and scream. The strident chorus brings back the harp, piano, rumbling drums, and Florence’s ever-evocative voice. It is quintessential Florence + The Machine, giving their version of Thriller meets Prince Charming as a commanding siren of the mind.
Whilst little else is known about the album, Florence has collaborated with close friends, including Mark Bowen of IDLES, Aaron Dessner of The National, and Mitski. Personally, I cannot wait to hear how Mitski and Florence’s talents combine, and I expect to be emotionally devastated one way or another. ‘Everybody Scream’ is available to pre-order on the Florence + The Machine website, where clearly cassettes are back in fashion! The single is out now, with the album arriving on 31st October.
