Producer, songwriter, and DJ HAAi is gearing up for her second studio album, ‘HUMANiSE’, by releasing her latest single ‘Stitches’. HAAi revels in the world of synths and beats. What stands out to me is that Teneil Throssell, aka HAAi, straddles creating eclectic indie synth pop and rocking it as a DJ on the dancefloor. Many of her songs choose to run the entire gamut, with previous singles ‘Hey!‘ being designed for the club, and ‘Satellite‘ moving from ethereal vocals and ambient synth into a throbbing dancefloor groove.
‘Stitches’ is far more of a grimier, hazier slink. The bounding stride between bass notes and kick drum throb lets HAAi’s vocals soar. I’m reminded slightly of Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith at times, but with a club-forward approach. The whole single has a damaged fuzz to it that you often find in shoegaze music. It is as if the song has been salvaged from a lost VHS tape. Speaking about ‘Stitches’, HAAi says:
“‘Stitches’ is a naive love letter to yourself, your lover and your friends. The people who evoke the strongest feelings in you and who make you feel the most human.”
The album ‘HUMANiSE’, due for release on 10th October, explores what it means to be human in an increasingly digital world. AI is used as an everyday threat to emulate and take away humanity, creativity, and offer a facsimile of the human soul. HAAi thought about a machine with a human heart, to help her explore the differences between a machine-led dystopia and an emotion-filled utopia. That helped her find her voice and use her own vocals throughout the album. It also helped HAAi explore community through collaboration. The album will have a selection of musical guests such as Jon Hopkins, Obi Franky, and KAM-BU, but also poet James Massiah and artist Kaiden Ford. If a community can create music and art, then, in theory, it can create hope.
