Nina Conti’s ’10 Holes’ is my favourite unhinged minute of comedic vulgarity this year

Nina Conti is one of my favourite comedians, and she has taken ventriloquism into realms I’d never expected it to go over her career. Thought-provoking, self-aware, and often quietly dark, Nina’s battle with using Monk the Monkey to say the things she wishes she could say herself is a delicate balance of comedy and mental spiralling. She has plenty of comedy specials and was also part of the excellent Christopher Guest sitcom ‘Family Tree’.

‘Sunlight’ is Nina’s feature-length film and directorial debut. Written by and starring both herself and Shenoah Allen, it creeps firmly into dark comedy territory. Nina Conti plays Jane, a person so damaged from a toxic relationship that she hides inside her monkey costume. She then meets Roy, a suicidal radio show host intent on a unique path to freedom. Both a road trip and a movie of self-discovery, it looks both batshit crazy and quite emotional, too.

At one point, the two main characters sing a song about Jane having “10 Holes”. This has been picked up by the film’s composer, Christoph Bauschinger, and turned into a bizarre earworm that I’ve had on repeat far more times than I care to admit. I need the full version of this as an MP3 to buy, please! Strong crude warning, this is NFSW!
