Sotomayor return with new a fresh mix of Afro Latin grooves

Celebrating 10 years creating music by embracing imperfections

Mexican siblings Raúl and Paulina Sotomayor return, announcing their first album in six years, ‘WABI SABI’. The electronic artists, who produce banging beats with Latin flair, have been off doing solo projects since the pandemic. Paulina launched her solo project Pahua, whilst Raúl produced for other artists under the awesome name Tonga Conga (I would buy this as a video game title by the way). Now back together, the duo wanted to combine what they’ve learnt and experienced into their next album, and that meant mixing cultures, traditions, and influences.

‘Who’s There’ is the lead single. It has a deep house, bass-forward vibe, and showcases Sotomayor’s most electronic album to date. The album was completed in two weeks, and I wonder if that plays into its minimalist approach. The beats are bold, the bass cutting, and the other instrumentation and effects are quite sparse. The second track previewed from the album called ‘Vida‘, is more complex. It features wiry synths and some jamming Afro-Cuban percussion mixed with some light Drum N Bass beats, which makes the sound fuller. I enjoyed both tracks for their direct, no-filler approach, but it’s ‘Vida‘ that has me the most excited. The mixture of Afro and Latin instrumentation is both strong and bold. I can’t sit still listening to it.

It’s ‘Who’s There’ that has the disco music video, however! It’s great to have Sotomayor back. Both tracks are out now, and ‘WABI SABI’ is due for release on the 13th February 2026. You can pre-order the album on Bandcamp. For more information about Sotomayor, follow them on Instagram.
