Canadian electronic band Elsiane has long captivated fans with its dark, witchy trip-hop music. A large reason why the duo have been a cult success for so many years is the captivating vocals of Elsieanne Caplette. Her voice is distinctive, her range is huge, and there’s a tribalistic emotion that resonates through her vocal arrangements. Sometimes she is soft and motherly. Most of the time, there is an intangible wisdom.
A few years ago, Elsieanne was involved in a car accident that left her with a brain concussion and injuries that meant she was unable to move, speak, or sing. Caplette spent three years going through therapy to relearn how to get her voice back. In her recent newsletter, she explains:
“It was 3 years of therapy, of learning how to be with myself again. And in that quiet, in that stillness, I started to reconnect with my voice. Slowly. First by humming. Then by mantras. By meditating. By listening inward. From that place, I started my journey towards inner peace. And from there, this new solo album was born.”
‘Safe Frontiers (Love Is The Answer)’ is the lead single from this new chapter. Written during the wake of heavy Covid disruption and the wars that followed, Elsienne wanted to write a lullaby of sorts to calm the mind and offer a loving alternative. She says that the high-pitched melody represented all the souls lost in recent wars. It is a beautiful track that bides its time to swell from a sorrowful dark to something deeply cathartic and healing. Fans of Elsiane will feel right at home, too. The ethereal edge remains, but with a softer hue on this uplifting and comforting single.
