Big Thief has created a live bootleg archive of their shows and I love it

They've been recording shows for seven years!

Alt rock band Big Thief still believes in websites, newsletters, and creating their own corner of the internet. It is something many musicians would do well to cultivate, as a social media follow is cheap. In their recent newsletter, they highlighted a fantastic live archive project they’ve been working on. The aim is to expand their collection of live recordings into a playlist archive, completely free, for fans to enjoy at any time. Listeners can scroll through a timeline, select the live show, and listen back to memories of shows attended or shows missed. Big Thief says that the songs change shape and form each night, depending on the crowd and venue, so being able to hear variations of songs is as interesting to them as it is fun for fans to experience.

Listeners can access the Big Thief Live Archive on their website. A new show will be posted on the second Tuesday of each month. Big Thief has recorded each live show since 2019, but they are on the search for any recordings pre-2019. If you have them, get in touch with the band.

There are lots of artists I can imagine who would have a library of show recordings over the years. I’ve long campaigned for professional bootleg recordings of musicians’ tours to be available to buy, especially for artists that change set lists or song arrangements often. This is a fantastic idea, and I hope other artists follow suit. Not only do we take back our internet, but it can be a savvy future revenue stream for super fans and memory revisitors alike. If there are artists you’d like to follow suit, post a comment about them.
