I’m always on the lookout for interesting websites that open the gateway for budding musicians to learn instruments and their craft. Tonalics is a free website that has MIDI-style instruments laid out inside the web browser so they can be played using your mouse, keyboard, or touchscreen. Each instrument comes with size or scale variations, and besides just jamming on them, you can follow nursery rhymes and public domain songs to get a basic understanding of how the instrument is laid out and plays.
Alongside the tons of MIDI instruments, you can also allow the website access to your microphone to act as a digital chromatic tuner. If you don’t have a mic available, the tuner can play note tones to help you tune real instruments on the fly. As someone whose perennially running out of batteries at the wrong time, this appless approach is very welcome in a digital slop age. Lastly, the site also houses a metronome and a collection of blogs for detailed tuning tutorials for various fretted instruments.
I was mucking about on Tonalics earlier today as a way to allow me to test melodic motifs with my typing keyboard so I can create music whilst most of my real instruments are packed away before I move property. I found it fun and straightforward, but I also have a fondness for mid-90s MIDI files in the age before MP3 sharing. Younger audiences may not appreciate some of the digital tones, given today’s technologies, but the principles and learning on Tonalics are sound. I don’t do sponsored posts or content, so take this as a genuine discovery of something quite useful! Enjoy!
