I’m three years late to the party, but it’s better late than never. Victory Chimes is the moniker for Montreal-based rocker Jeff Louch. Having made music since 2008 under this guise, he expanded Victory Chimes into a five-piece band in 2022. At the same time, he released his second LP, ‘When the Fog Rolls In’, and this is where I discovered them. The opening track, ‘New Mode’, is a hypnotic psych-synth revelation. The track is built around a circular bass riff that resonates like the bass end of an electric piano that’s spilling out its guts. It’s a little funky, a little synthpoppy, and a whole lot of controlled psych-rock. Add in vocals that remind me of Sea Wolf and some excellent rhythmic trip-beats, and you have a great earworm. I was drawn in immediately, and have gobbled up both albums to discover more.
Victory Chimes says that ‘When the Fog Rolls In’ was inspired by the welcomed solitude of the Rocky Mountains at the Banff Centre before being thrown directly into the forced solitude of pandemic lockdown. When something we crave for becomes out of balance, or our control, our minds begin to wander and wonder about what we really wanted after all. Expect a mish-mash of rock, shoegaze-synthpop, and a lot of electric piano and Rhodes-style sounds throughout. Victory Chimes almost veers into jazz territory at times, but its roots are firmly planted in snazzy rock.
