A Thousand Mad Things is the synthpop meets new romantics world of English artist William Barradale. Following the release of his debut EP ‘Cry & Dance’ last year, he continues to weave clever, theatrical synthpop earworms that pull ’80s synths and sounds into modern-day problems and issues. Think Human League (whom he has opened for), Marc Almond, and Thompson Twins, but with a soft gothic darkwave undercurrent bubbling away underneath.
‘Promises’ is the latest single from A Thousand Mad Things, and is about recognising when you are being emotionally manipulated and deciding to take the moral high ground instead. Barradale’s voice has a soft, cooing hue to it that draws you in initially with its floaty, almost disembodied tone. However, come the chorus, A Thousand Mad Things shows off their vocal range alongside some sassy, creepy-clown synths and a filtered yet chunky marching beat. It’s a song that feels purposefully clunky in its cheeky synth lines to allow the vocals to steer the emotional ship into port.
The new single ‘Promises’ is out now. For more information about future releases, follow A Thousand Mad Things on Instagram.
