Never one to sit still, Mitski announced her new forthcoming album ‘Nothing’s About to Happen to Me’ with a dazzling, chaotic rock single ‘Where’s My Phone?’. After recent albums explored Mitski’s more synth and art pop side of her wide musical range, this new single signals a push back to maddening, unapologetic rock. She hasn’t left her clever production and stylistic choices from recent eras behind her, though. This new single lets them pop up with some surprising twists.
‘Where’s My Phone?’ starts out as a chugging rock track. There’s a swing-rock beat, jangly guitars, and Mitski’s impassioned voice blurring across the track. Alongside this, a maiden, mother, and crone version of Mitski parade around a house of horrors of the heart and mind in the music video. As the track develops, the guitars and vocals become more detached from the main melody, resulting in a bridge of Mitski’s vocals that create a haunting yet sassy choir, drowning out the guitars as they laugh to the rhythm of the song. That twists back into a satisfying guitar solo outro, letting this visceral, whirlwind of a track truly unwind its fury and panic.
Sonically, it feels like a mix of ‘Bury Me At Makeout Creek’ but with all the knowledge gained from ‘Be The Cowboy’ and ‘The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We’. It has the former’s rage and the latter duo’s diverse soundscapes and production trickery. This makes sense because Mitski’s tour band for her recent ‘The Land’ tour played for this album, with an accompanying orchestra. Narratively, the album centres on a reclusive woman living life in an unkempt house. It will comment on life’s addictions, triumphs, and foibles, themes taken from the previous album. The single is out now, with a cracking music video that requires plenty of rewatches to unpack.
The album ‘Nothing’s About to Happen to Me’ is available to pre-order now. It is due for release on 27th February.
