What if a thrashing rock band swapped out half their guitars for glitchy 8-bit computers? That’s what Seattle-based duo Fresh Produce have done to create an electroclash attack on the senses. With Myla Proffitt on vocals, you get a punky sass you’d get from bands like Republica or Broken Baby. Meanwhile, Karl Fagerstrom provides live drums and programming of samples and sounds. It’s like a SNES went to a sex club with a nu-metal guitarist. What Flesh Produce create sounds like their drunken fumbles as they stagger home. Is it a guitar, or is it a twisted piece of chiptune being broken into guitar pieces? Whose to say…
Their new single, ‘Lightspeed’, is a bit more approachable and subdued compared to some of their previous work, and could be a great place to start your 8-bit nu-metal journey. Between retro 8-bit riffs that sound part guitar/part synth, and catchy chorus vocals, this is as poppy as Flesh Produce gets. It brings in-your-face energy, with a whateverness of some great modern rock bands like Charly Bliss. I also think fans of Crystal Castles and Xiu Xiu will find a lot to enjoy here.
The new single is out now. For more information about their releases and live shows, follow Flesh Produce on Bandcamp.
