Introducing… How to See Know and Fall

Using the world around us to create texture-as-rhythm sounds.

Firmly placed in the experimental electronic music world, How to See Know and Fall captured my attention by using different sounds to create “texture-as-rhythm” music. Using acoustic sounds, field recordings, and samples of weird and wonderful everyday noise, the duo create rhythmic music that has the listener guessing what they are listening to, whilst identifying different instruments from around the world alongside them. It’s a wonderful electro-acoustic mesh of ideas.

How to See Know and Fall are the duo Jesse Stiles and Brian Shankar Adlar. Jesse plays with the electronics, Brian tackles the percussion. Their unique combination of collaborative compositions piqued my attention because of how focused their debut single, ‘Panicum Repens’ is on the texture-as-rhythm philosophy. I can hear bubbles, strings, water, metal, plastic, tuned percussion, tabla, and all kinds of effects to bring an Earthly, African-tinged soundscape. As the track develops, the acoustic elements are increasingly warped and disrupted, but the rhythmic flow remains as strong as ever. The music video is a weird selection of media snippets that mesh together daily life with life’s little wonders. The whole project is a whirlwind of sensory discovery, and I’m excited to hear how their newly announced album explores this idea.

‘Panicum Repens’ is the debut single taken from the forthcoming debut album ‘ECOLOGIES’. The single is out now, with the album scheduled for release on 3rd April. You can pre-order the album on Bandcamp. For more information, you can also visit the personal websites of Jesse Stiles and Brian Shankar Adler.
