Very occasionally, artists I already adore end up competing to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. Whilst I feel the Eurovision has lost its way in recent years, it doesn’t mean I can’t cheer on some personal favourites.
Myrkur is a musician who mixes dark folk music and black metal. She often teeters on the edges of ethereal and calming, only to explode into chasms of rage or emotion. I find her music captivating. The dark folk elements often remind me of bands like Arcana, Faun, and, to a lesser extent, Unto Ashes. That means I get to enjoy some twisted Pagan witchy elements mixed in the black metal, too.
Myrkur’s vocal range is wide and powerful, and she uses it in full force with her new single, ‘Touch My Love and Die’. It’s a compact three-minute tour de force that showcases what Myrkur’s mystical rage can bring to music. The single will take part in Denmark’s selection process to represent the country in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. The competition is called the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix song competition and takes place on Saturday. In recent years, darker, theatrical rock and metal have done quite well, so best of luck to Myrkur, we’ll cheer you on in the shadows.
