Having announced her upcoming album ‘In Times of Dragons’, Tori Amos released the lead single ‘Stronger Together’ today. The track features her daughter, Natashya Hawley, not just on vocals but as co-writer, too. Tori’s daughter has featured on several tracks over the years, and the new single feels like an extension of ‘Promise’ from 2014’s ‘Unrepentant Geraldines’. The track builds from its soft pop origins into an uplifting call to arms, with the signature piano joining in from the second verse to transition the track to a contemporary radio hit in waiting.
Whilst the narrative around a wife escaping tyranny and seeking solace with her daughter is a dark one, this track appears to be a soothing balm for sisterhood and understanding. Twelve years ago, with ‘Promise’, the theme was that mother and daughter wouldn’t leave each other out in the cold. This time around, ‘Stronger Together’ makes the point of Natashya becoming a woman, and that means they can face a problem head-on together, instead of as cover for each other. It’s a heartwarming throughline of Amos’ work, where certain songs have chronicled motherhood for her over the decades.
With dragons in the album title, I wasn’t expecting a softer, sentimental lead single, but I suspect this is Tori Amos’ way of cooling the fire before redirecting it with force elsewhere. ‘Stronger Together’ is out. The album ‘In Time Of Dragons’ is out on 1st May, with HMV receiving a bonus track on the special edition. You can pre-order the album on Tori Amos’ website.
