Introducing… Beatrice Deer

Inuit tradition meets modern indie pop.

‘Inuit Legend’ is the title of Beatrice Deer’s forthcoming, newly announced album. The indie rock musician based in Montreal is Inuit herself. Half-Inuk and half-Mohawk, she brings to life elements of traditional Inuit stories through a mixture of indie rock and modern folk, with throat singing making appearances, too. Beatrice won the 2018 Canadian Folk Music Award and has since composed for film alongside her own solo career.

To celebrate the announcement of her new album, the lead single ‘Falcon and the Woman’ has also been released. It is a multi-language indie rock track that has an Americana guitar hook, some stadium lighter-waving choruses, an uplifting bridge full of affirmation, and a catchy vocal arrangement that sticks in your head. There is something slightly Eurovision indie to the arrangement for me, and I find that quite endearing.

Beatrice Deer says the song came from a vague memory of a legend that she heard when she was 6 years old. It was about an evil falcon holding a woman against her will. She couldn’t remember the rest of the story, so she turned it into a survivor song about escaping domestic abuse.

The single is out now, with a lovely Canadian Arctic drone footage music video. The album ‘Inuit Legend’ is designed around reimagining fables passed down from Beatrice’s ancestors, aiming to bring a fresh perspective on old tales. The album comes out on 3rd April. You can buy ‘Inuit Legend’ on Bandcamp.
