Introducing… SOFY

Burnout leads to a darker indie pop refresh for UK's SOFY.

UK-based songwriter SOFY previously created peppy indie pop with a bubblegum undertone that mixed in everyday life with pop culture references. Spot the song titled ‘Timothée Chalamet‘ as a reference point. There was always something grounded and street-weary about SOFY’s work, but with her upcoming album, she’s going grittier.

Following a year of burnout and mental health struggles, SOFY’s new era of music marks a darker, grittier edge as her work takes a more personal turn. That means the guitars are sharper, louder, edgier, and more discordant than before. The vocals are less sassy and more pissed off. SOFY shines on her new single ‘Wishbone’, which is about chasing ambition, whilst grappling with expectation. Sounding a bit like my toxic day job, SOFY says, “it’s about loving something that doesn’t love you back.” Whilst it still carries strong pop sensibilities from its snappy chord progressions, the raw rock tone packs a powerful punch. Indie pop can be earnest and a bop, and I personally prefer the darker side compared to previous, lighter releases.

It’s interesting how SOFY has used burnout and acceptance of perceived dreams and actual reality to reframe her music and career. It’s something I’m also working through after being utterly rinsed dry by corporate hell, and coming to the realisation that nothing will ever be enough. It gives you an odd state of calm when you realise that there are other paths you can take, and in doing so, you take back what success means to you. Maybe that’s why ‘Wishbone’ really jumped out to me upon first listen. I can hear the desperation of the chase and the had-it-up-to-here feelings in the delivery.

Whilst there’s no word on an album release yet, ‘Wishbone’ is the start of a new era of music, marking the tonal shift. There are some UK tour dates in the summer. For more information beyond the single and its Harley Quinn is a murderer music video, sign up for the mailing list on Sofy’s website.
