Whilst Toronto-based musician and artist Kadhja Bonet works on her third album, the alternative orchestral soul musician has released an incomplete 14-minute track. Titled ‘Geodesic Planet (unfinished suite)’, Kadhja states it was recorded in 2015, but as the original files are lost, it’s a piece that’s stuck in limbo. As it is, the suite has sumptuous string arrangements, glossy soul vocals, and extended psychedelic synth and bass lines that have escaped a sensory overload centre.
The music is missing recordings from a percussionist and a French horn player, which explains some of the wild synth and bass moments that you’d usually expect a drummer to be lashing out on. Yet, despite the music being frozen mid-production, the track feels full of life and ideas. The constant switches between soul and psychedelia feel natural and earned. Kadjha Bonet’s vocals are as sublime and angelic as ever. It is a fine example of something beyond a raw demo, but not quite the finished article, and it’s honestly quite beautiful. This maybe wouldn’t sound so interesting or unique if it were a rock band, but because this is an orchestral-style arrangement, the usual expected tones are missing. Moments of stark directness are mixed with luscious cascades of amber notes. It just sounds fascinating.
‘Geodesic Planet’ is out now and can be purchased on Kadhja Bonet’s Bandcamp.
