After stumbling across Greenness on Instagram yesterday, I’ve been down a bit of a rabbit hole exploring their music. At its core, Greenness is an indie rock duo from couple Cess and Graham. They started performing music over a decade ago, and their most recent album ‘Honeymoons’ came out in November 2025. Greenness embodies a true DIY approach, not just in their music, but in their music videos, live performances, and their self-released record label setup. There is a saying that being self-employed means you wear all of the business hats, and Greenness can attest to that mantra!
The duo are incredibly difficult to pin down into a genre, and that’s part of their charm. There are splashes of art rock, elements of chamber pop, a smear of indie folk, and on their latest album, even some psychedelic prog rock and jazz. It is a real melting pot, yet there is cohesion in their sound design and emotional core.
From their latest album, I’ve chosen to highlight their single ‘Psychopomps’, which blends indie rock with a bit of harp and an aerial acrobatic performance.”I’m not ready to meet my death” repeats the sludgy chorus in a way that gets the blood pumping. From the same album, ‘Meltdown’ is a sunny, whimsical, seaside rock track that showcases their hometown of Brighton, whilst embracing a mental breakdown in the sun. I love the delicate balance between quaint rootsy folk and the slightly off-kilter vocals and electric guitars that threaten rising dread at any moment.
For more information about the duo, visit Greenness’ website. You can get access to a free live show from the album launch when you join their mailing list. I’ll be picking up their latest album on payday for a future review, before diving into the back catalogue.
