Deep Sea Diver’s cover of Massive Attack’s ‘Teardrop’ is fabulous

Seattle-based musician and artist Deep Sea Diver has long been creating excellent rock music. Fronted by the emotive Jessica Dobson, Deep Sea Diver has released a cover of Massive Attack’s ‘Teardrop’, and I love their arrangement of it. The first half keeps the ethereal trip-hop vibes that imbue the original, with just a hint of electric guitar poking out from the background. Around the halfway mark, the song switches gears. The drums pick up pace, the electric guitars roar in, and the twinkling synths of the original become a slow-motion electronic glaze over the top. Jessica’s voice switches from ghostly to more unhinged as she rages and cries out, “you’re stumbling in the dark”.

Speaking on the song and covers in general, Deep Sea Diver’s Jessica says:

“We have always loved the voice and spirit of Elizabeth Fraser; her collaboration with Massive Attack is one of my all-time favorite songs. I was stopped in my tracks as a kid the first time I heard it. It has a magic that is undeniable, and we wanted to live in that magic for a while and to show it to our audience. Doing covers brings us back to connecting us to what we love and as we are writing new songs, we are really trying to purely focus on things that we love and are drawn to, even if mysteriously, like this one. A mysterious beauty.”
