Embracing her cowboy western era with her latest album, ‘Graceland Way’, Mikaela Davis recently performed on KEXP. KEXP is easily one of the best places for artists to get a bigger radio stage and a mighty fine video production, and once again they don’t disappoint. Whilst cowboy western music is a bit outside my usual wheelhouse, Mikaela Davis’ earlier music was more alternative pop. That said, her harp is omnipresent even in this era, and hearing a harp as part of a traditional American highway rock album makes her music texturally fascinating. Mikaela plays it like a cross between a piano and guitar, depending on the part of the song. Then she’ll weave in some glissandos, something that only the harp can do. Whatever character and clothes the harp puts on, the tracks slap anyway.
