Hailing from Austin, Texas, Mass Minor is a darkwave project led by Andrew J. Martin Jr. Expect dark discoteque synths from the 80s mixed in with chugging bass, driving guitars, and a post-punk meets new romantic vocal performance from Andrew. If you are a fan of bands like Vision Video, Sacred Skin, Urban Heat, and TRAITRS, you’ll be at home here. Indeed, Mass Minor has performed alongside them. Long-established acts like Depeche Mode and Tears For Fears also spring to mind.
‘Get Up’ is the latest single from Mass Minor’s forthcoming album ‘Beyond The Edge of Reason’. It goes straight for the jugular with pulsating beats, guitar hooks that bend, and some cracking lyrics. The opening line stabs: “Got a message from God. She said, ‘what the fuck have you done?'” before exploring an idea that I often get frustrated with. Mass Minor urges the listener to not be a passive bystander, expecting a God to fix your problems. As an individual and as a society, we can sidestep responsibility if we put the outcome or task onto God’s shoulders. The flipside is taking action, and the urgency of the drums, synths, guitars, and vocals lights a fire underneath you. ‘Get Up’ is a darkwave protest song designed to embolden and empower you to take charge of your next step.
I love that Mass Minor’s music feels nostalgic and familiar without sounding like a rehash. Andrew’s voice is striking and cuts through the electro-rock angst with bite and poise. He’s rowdy and tuneful, so the punk element is strong but not fighting against the melodic nature of electronic rock or dark synth-pop sensibilities. I am already a fan, and will be picking up his 2020 debut ‘Become Each Other’ as well as the EPs since.
‘Get Up’ is out now. For more information about Mass Minor’s gigs and releases, visit Mass Minor’s website. The forthcoming album ‘Beyond The Edge Of Reason’ is currently slated for a late February 2027 release.
