Whilst I get prepped to write the review for her collaborative album with Colin Stetson, the smallpipes sensation Brìghde Chaimbeul graced the NPR Tiny Desk Concert this week. It’s incredibly rare to have Scottish Highland music represented on stages like this, so Brìghde did the pipes proud. It’s great to watch how the bellow-blown smallpipes are played. Brìghde Chaimbeul takes traditional songs, complete with Gaelic vocals, and turns them into elastic and transformative drones, with minimal synth backing and live effects.
If you are partial to bagpipes, or want to experience a variation of bagpipes in a traditional-meets-transformation setting, Brìghde Chaimbeul is where you’ll find solace. Not a frame drum in sight, either! For more information about her music, visit Brìghde Chaimbeul’s website.
