Australian dream pop artist Geowulf often pairs uplifting and catchy dream pop with heavy or sad emotional lyrics hiding in plain sight. Over the course of three albums, Star Kendrick turned what was more of a band into a solo project, and has brought deeper themes and thoughts to Geowulf over time. She has announced that a new four track EP titled ‘Twinkly Depression’ is on the way in October. The lead single ‘Top Down’ is out now.
‘Top Down’ has elements of shoegaze rock mangled into an uptempo, nostalgically ’90s dream pop anthem. It is effortlessly catchy and captures that “happy-sad” energy Geowulf does so well. Speaking about the single, Geowulf said:
“Written mostly about my struggle to recover from postnatal anxiety, its lyrics reflect an unraveling and a quiet cry for help. But then my producer and friend, Duncan Mills, breathed new life into it, turning it into this unexpected upbeat banger. I love how it’s taken on a new energy—it’s a deeply sad song, but you wouldn’t know that unless you really dug into the lyrics.”
If you are looking for a hopeful, optimistic song about braving the storm and enjoying a car roof top down moment with the wind in your hair as you come out the other side, then ‘Top Down’ is your song.
