SPELLLING is an artist who sits uniquely and uncomfortably between genres that you don’t often mix. It is why I find her music so intriguing. She is a total rocker, with a soulful R&B voice and backing vocals. Veering from wild thrashing rock and serene screams to more experimental Americana pop-rock, you aren’t quite sure where the music is going to go. Instead of going for polished, SPELLLING goes for feeling. It isn’t for everyone (what is), but if it clicks, you’ll be on an emotional rollercoaster.
SPELLLING’s latest album, ‘Portrait of a Heart,’ is her fourth album. It was released earlier this year. It has been a huge revolution over those four records, as SPELLING started off with a synth, a loop pedal, and her voice. Now she has a whole band attached, her sound has expanded into a grunge-edged rock explosion. On this KEXP performance, she performs four tracks from the album, showing the dynamic range the album holds. Personal favourites are the title track with its moody drive, and ‘Waterfall’ with its dramatic finale.
For more information about all her work, visit the SPELLLING website. I’ll be reviewing ‘Portrait of a Heart’ soon, but in short, it’s great.
