The beauty of Max LL and his compositions is you are never sure exactly what style he will pop up with next. ‘Regeneration’ is a very short EP of music Max LL composed for a film about sustainable agricultural practices. The resulting music is five short pieces that feel homely, South American and organic.
The whole EP is over in under seven minutes and thankfully its priced accordingly as each track is a character motif of South American guitar and tuned percussion. It is beautiful and rich from beginning to end but it is exceptionally short. What I love about it though is how natural it feels and how each song moves seamlessly into the next. ‘Harvest’ is a light dance of bountiful open strums and castanets. ‘Regeneration’ is a sweeping string serenity piece. ‘A Step Further’ feels like a bustling town and closer ‘Community’ reminds me of traditional Peruvian music. It is difficult to get rich tuned percussion to sound natural and rounded but this track has it.
Is ‘Regeneration’ an essential purchase? Due to its length probably not. It is however a fine example of a musician and composer who just picks a style and runs with it. Max LL has done Iran, Japan, Spain and piano works – he can turn his hand to so much. I’d strongly recommend hearing even his tiniest output for musical genius moments.
