The 8-member vocal collective B O D I E S is returning with its new album ‘The Dream’ next month, and to celebrate, they’ve released a live a cappella performance of the album track ‘The Observable Universe’. The performance took place at Monopol Berlin, an atmospheric industrial room with excellent reverb. It allows B O D I E S to showcase how dynamic their vocal ranges are, as the track rises from its soulful opening into a thunderous, almost Balkan-like chant for its finale. The finger-clicks and footstomps bring drama and gravitas. It is a stunning tour-de-force.
Every sound on ‘The Dream’ is created by the human body. Voice, breath, stomp, clap, and click. Not a single machine in sight. B O D I E S is led by Kat Frankie, who has also taken some fan favourites from her earlier solo work and rearranged them for the band. Those previous songs had piano, guitar, bass, and plenty of other instruments. Not so this time around. One of my favourite things about the band is their ability to defy genre, too. Some tracks are soulful, some are folksy, some are more choral, and others are more experimental. There’s an indie rawness and realness to their sound that I cannot get enough of.
I’ll be getting my next B O D I E S fix when ‘The Dream’ is released on the 20th November. You can pre-order the vinyl and find out more about tour dates on the B O D I E S website. I’ll personally be picking up the digital release on Bandcamp.
