Introducing… Maarja Nuut

Experimental ambient electronica to go nuuts with.

Estonia singer, producer and electronic artist Maarja Nuut is gearing up to release her third album ‘hinged’ on the 20th August. Highly experimental but still melodic and groovy, Maarja reminds me of the Estonia equivalent of someone like Juana Molina. She is someone who is doing something largely unique and expressive in her musical field (electronica) and is quite incomparable to her peers. That makes every release exciting but often quite tricky to describe. I feel like her music is often pointing towards the direction of something but leaving gaps for you to fill in. Rhythms are often broken up, melodies meander as they sway in the wind and Maarja Nuut has a voice that evokes curiosity. her previous two albums took time to click with me. When they did though, the bond was sealed and they are wonderful projects to return back to time and again.

‘a scene merevees’ is the new single from the forthcoming album ‘hinged’. Unlike a large chunk of the album, it focuses on softer ambient tones. They work like brush strokes to paint the outline of an idea. Maarja says the inspiration for ‘hinged’ came from looking at possessions from her five-generation farmland and how those generations could have a fabled meeting together again. It is a romantic and dreamy world that Maarja Nuut lives in and this track presents it beautifully.

Enjoy ‘a scene merevees’ below. The album is available to pre-order on Bandcamp.
