Introducing… Villager

Ethereal beats and quirky electronica collide for a debut album ten years in the making.

I love it when a producer is able to make something sound both ethereal and a bit stir crazy. That’s exactly how I feel “Lotus”, the new single from Villager. Villager is the name of producer and DJ Alex Young. Whilst he has been touring and working in music for a decade from the tender age of 15, 2022 will mark his debut album. Due for release on the 29th of January, “Frontier” will showcase a nighttime groove with layers of both smooth and complex synths. On the surface, things feel like ocean waves of sounds that cascade across the speakers whilst the beats move your feet. Underneath, tiny quirky sounds and spasms of noise are hidden for you to uncover.

The album is structured like a build-up and inevitable come down and the track “Lotus” showcases this in a microcosm. I am reminded of Bonobo and at times Caribou as starter references. There’s a little of Stubborn Heart’s dissonance there too. It’s clear that years of touring and curating music with label Eden and Boys Noize has given Villager a rounded musical palette to draw from. The music is all the more interesting for it.

Enjoy the video for “Lotus” below. The single is out now and the album “Frontier” is out January 29th. Pre-orders are available on Bandcamp.
