Australian quartet Johnny Hunter were one of my favourite discoveries of 2021. Their big hooks and bigger distinctive vocals made their rock feel one part Adam Ant, one part The Cure and one part Joy Division. The band return in 2022 with their new single “Cry Like A Man” – a rallying cry for men to embrace vulnerability. This song is written from personal experience of frontman Nick Hutt who said “I had been placed in the unfortunate position of witnessing someone shrink into very selfish and abusive behaviour. It had been my first encounter with such an event and it shook me to my core.” It is an important message and one this writer wishes was given more time and exposure. Big boys do cry.
The song itself is quintessential Johnny Hunter. Catchy melodies, bold vocals and theatrical post-punk anthems for the 2020s, it is another excellent single. Enjoy the track below – it’s out now. You can find out more about the band by following them on Twitter and Instagram.
