Zouj’s music video for “One!” gives digital avatars an existential crisis

Future-pop weirdness about being lost in a digital world.

Zouj is a French, Moroccan and American producer who creates visceral and twisted future pop. After a flurry of singles in 2021, “One!” marks a new body of work that plays around with glitchy beats, choppy synths and vocals that have been tuned down far too many octaves! The result is a pop track that feels like it wants to be hip-hop, chiptune, synthwave and pop all at once whilst carving out its own identity.

The music video Zouj has paired with the music is what really caps it off for me. It is about a digital avatar looking for its real identity. The avatar searches various digital locations, templates, skins and textures but just can’t quite find a home. I am personally delighted that in this body of work, digital avatars are having an existential crisis too. The video was created by Julie Amouzegar Kim.

Alongside the single, Zouj announced a Summer and Autumn headline tour across Europe. For more information about Zouj, his music and his tour, visit his website.
