The NPR Tiny Desk series is one of my favourite ways to find new musicians. Their stripped-back coffee shop style approach usually lends itself to more cozy, intimate performances and jams. PJ Harvey is by no means a new name but her latest album ‘I Inside the Old Year Dying’ absolutely suits this theme. Seeing her move into ethereal English folk and more abstract sounds means she can sing like a woman with centuries of wisdom and knowledge.
The Tiny Desk setlist contains four tracks from her latest album before finishing off with a lovely guitar rendition of ‘White Chalk’ from her piano-based 2007 album. I was blown away by her live performances from her ‘Let England Shake’ era when I saw her live last. She had harnessed a campfire troupe moulding of musicians and that culture has been nurtured beautifully here too. Enjoy the Tiny Desk performance below and if you’ve never come across NPR’s Tiny Desk series before – dive deep into the archives. They are a treat.
