Contemporary classical music continues to find new and interesting ways to blur lines with other genres and tuba player and composer Daniel Herskedal is a fine example of this. Whilst you’ll find his music is rooted in a crossover between contemporary classical and jazz, Daniel also leans on his Norwegian roots. His new single ‘To Render In Paint’ is a folk-tinged duet between Daniel’s tuba and Norwegian folk-inspired vocals backed up with thoughtful and delicate strings and rootsy percussion. Both meditative and cinematically restrained, it is a song that carves out a bold and confident mood without ever raising its voice.
‘To Render In Paint’ is the lead single from Daniel Herskedal’s forthcoming album ‘A Single Sunbeam’. The album is due for release on 1st March and is expected to continue this cinematic intimate juxtaposition. Daniel says the album will explore where ambient textures, atmospheric layers and warm melodies collide. I’m definitely getting winter-around-the-fireplace feels. On Herskedal’s previous albums, he often puts the tuba into new or lesser-trodden melodic or resonant mix positions. I get the impression we are going to see the softer side of the brass bass instrument here.

Just a friendly remark: The voice featured on Herskedals To Render In Paint, is actually a yoik performed by Marja Mortensson. Saami yoik is completely different from norweigan folk music
