Natacha Simões is the artist behind Lisbon-born and London-based indie-rock songwriter Maripool. She is gearing up for her debut album ‘Rotten Luck’, which was written during a month-long residency returning to Lisbon last year. Spending the month in a delapidated fisherman’s building with a broken window, leaky ceilings, and no Wi-Fi, Maripool let the isolation set in. That was juxtaposed by venturing out into the city at night to revisit old haunts.
‘Favourite’ is the second single from the forthcoming album, and it blends 90s indie rock with elements of shoegaze and a ragged unravelling towards the end. The initial verses and chorus have a catchy numbness. Guitars pick away with a catchy hook before the track transitions into a raw, shoegazed-punk rendition of the first half of the track. Maripool’s vocals get hoarser as she screams “you don’t even know me” at someone who she pines for but seemingly barely acknowledges her back. The guitars and bass get fuzzier but barely raise their volume or power, and it makes the song feel more viscerally vulnerable, as its Maripool’s cries that drive the pulse of the track. I’ve had it on repeat for a while, and now I need to share it with you all. There’s a distinct Tummyache vibe that I’m loving, but fans of Sonic Youth will be right at home.
‘Rotten Luck’ will be out on the 28th August, with the single ‘Favourite’ releasing today. If you can get to Brighton, London, or Bristol, Maripool has some live shows in support of the album in October.
