This is niche, even for Higher Plain Music, but I love the concept and idea behind Datassette’s latest audio series. Titled ‘Audio Survey’, the electronic artist has recorded long walks across the UK using lav mics and wind shields. Datassette tracked his walks with GPS data and plotted them onto a UK Ordnance Survey map to create an animated chart of his walk as the sounds unfold.
The two episodes so far cover walks across London. You’ll hear traffic, bits of conversation, pedestrian crossing bleeps, shop ambience, and general city noise. It’s perfect for background audio as you work, and I find myself flicking back to the screen to see where Datassette’s legs have taken him on his travels. Speaking of the field recordings, the artist says it may well become an audio diary of how the world sounded before the AI apocalypse. Whilst there is a softness to the field recordings, I don’t think many will use them as sleep aids because you’ll hear emergency sirens, car door slams, basketball bounces, and other harsh sounds.
A side note on the graphics and animations. They remind me of the board game Scotland Yard. Anyone else remember that game?
