British singer-songwriter and esoteric pop-rock artist Nick Hudson is always working on something. If he isn’t painting, he is writing or filming something, but music and sound cut across all his artistic endeavours. Breaking out from his band The Academy of Sun, Nick Hudson leans into the quirkier side of piano pop and if you enjoy David Bowie, Tori Amos, Kate Bush or Nick Cave – you’ll find something here. Hudson also brings a macabre gothic glee to his work, so I think fans of Danny Elfman soundtracks would also embrace the dark beauty here too.
Nick Hudson currently spends his time in Tbilisi, Georgia, but was in the UK during Covid. This inspired the background for the lead single ‘For My Silence’.
“This is a song about apologising to those you love for the period in which you disappeared to make bad life choices, while also singling out those who stood by and did nothing in the name of friendship during this period. The period in question was the third lockdown, where I literally had a glimpse of hell courtesy of a significant mental health collapse.
Nick Hudson on ‘For My Silence’
The piano was recorded in Tbilisi at Leno Studio, a former Soviet movie studio. Much of the album was recorded there, working with a selection of Georgian musicians. You can hear the expert penmanship and musical craft shine through as ‘For My Silence’ picks up pace and agency across its runtime. Sometimes nothing beats a traditional singer-songwriter band approach to emotionally charged music and Nick Hudson is the perfect example of that.
‘For My Silence’ is out now and you can enjoy the music video for it below. It is taken from the forthcoming album ‘Kanda Teenage Honey’ which will be released on 15th March. You can pre-order the album on Bandcamp and I personally always enjoy Nick’s Twitter as he is always up to something different!
