After his previous album ‘Milktooth’ took a stripped-back intimate approach, Douglas Dare has flipped the script for his upcoming album. The British artist has announced his fourth album ‘Omni’ as a cinematic rebirth that embraces a love of rave culture. Dare describes the album as “a throbbing, avant-garde, queer, dark and cinematic record” and the lead single ‘Mouth to Mouth’ fits that well.
‘Mouth to Mouth’ takes some of the electronic elements from Douglas Dare’s first two albums and puts them in a washing machine with The Knife and Arca. The synths are taut and anthemic, like trumpeting blossoms of neon lights. Dare’s voice moves from hypnotic to soulful across the piece. Rival Consoles created the beats and they flip between brushed elegance and something tickling your subwoofer. With pianos and acoustics swapped out for synths and drum machines, the seductive lustful nature of the pulsating rhythms lures you into its den of filth. I’m here for it.
This change of direction really suits the darker hues of Douglas Dare’s writing and I think this could be a sleeper hit album in 2024. Enjoy the visualiser for ‘Mouth to Mouth’ below, the single is out now. ‘Omni’ comes out 10th May and is available for pre-order on Bandcamp.
