Anna Coddington’s forthcoming album ‘Te Whakamiha’ is a bilingual genre-bending collection of songs in te reo Māori and English. While Anna describes her work as Māori Funk, it encompasses elements of rock, funk, soul, R&B and a splash of pop. I’m reminded at times of Prince and Peter Gabriel through either an uptempo 90s neo-soul lens or something more directly pop-rock related.
The new album focuses on gratitude and appreciation. The album title translates to her band name The Appreciations. The Auckland-based singer-songwriter has released her new single ‘Mōhou Rā’ – a pacey, jangly pop-rock anthem that builds into a euphoric crescendo. It showcases Anna’s love of the guitar and her ability to rock out with the best of them. It is a huge contrast compared to the previous single ‘Kātuarehe’. That track embraced a funky soul Māori sass channelling early Natalie Imbruglia with 80s big production.
‘Te Whakamiha’ is going to be an album with a wide range of styles so I’ve included both singles’ music videos below. The album itself releases on 28th June. For more information on all things Anna Coddington visit her Bandcamp.
