NYC duo Frenchy and the Punk bring a gothic elegance to their rock. Samantha Stephenson has a commanding voice that gracefully floats from sensual faery to flaming siren. Her powerful delivery is captivating and Scott Helland’s guitar work brings a post-punk cabaret edge. It’s smokey and seeped in ages of mystery. The different elements of Frenchy and the Punk are separated out in the mix so Samantha’s voice glides over the rock as if she’s a bird circling around the track.
Now together as a duo for nearly 20 years, their new single ‘Like In A Dream’ lets Helland enjoy what he calls a “Gilmour” guitar riff whilst Stephenson floats around like a ghost. It is taken from their forthcoming album ‘Mightnight Garden’ which comes out on 28th June. To celebrate they’ll be touring the UK alongside Miranda Sex Garden and I can see how the bands complement each other. Both have a gothic performative side that invigorates the listener.
