DVA return with their unique brand of odd kitchen sink electro-folk with ‘Kung Fu’

DVA are a duo that I’ve admired and respected for years. When not composing soundtracks for Amanita Games like Botanicula, Happy Game and Chuchel, they release their own music too. Central to their sound are childlike vocals that mix a made-up language alongside pretend animal sounds and blowing raspberries. There is usually some saxophone in there too – going wild and sounding animalistics. The animal sounds often mash into wild and weird beats and a plethora of weird folk instruments or household items. You never know what you’ll get but it’ll be a treat every time.

‘Kung Fu’ is the lead single for their new album ‘Piri Piri’. The album is due out on the 13th of September and documents the change of seasons from a Nordic summer to a Nordic winter. The Czech duo will no doubt unleash all kinds of fun and unusual sounds and I can’t wait to get stuck in. ‘Kung Fu’ itself is a jangly pop track with a stomping beat, increasingly absurd and unhinged vocalisations and a good stab of saxophone at the end. DVA tend to write songs that unravel as they transition from one mood to another and this single sounds more sinister towards the end than the playful first half.

Enjoy the excellent ‘Kung Fu’ below, it’s out now. For more information about DVA and their forthcoming album ‘Piri Piri’ follow them on Bandcamp.
